This exercise highlights the difficulty of reconciling large intervals with a piano accompaniment that is not always complicit ; notably tritone intervals, difficult for the singer to sing against, as he is already confronted with many sevenths and major seconds which double the vocal line, giving intervals of ninths. As the form of exercise suggest, it is interesting to pinpoint vowels that are easy or difficult to sing ; a mixture of both of them can also be considered.
